Perspective on Large-Scale Hydrogen Generation

A new Perspective article published in Smart Materials and Devices by Xiaoshuai Wang and Prof. Zhong-Yong Yuan highlights the key requirements for photocatalysts and reactor architectures to enable large-scale hydrogen generation.

The open-access paper, titled “Key Requirements for Photocatalysts and Reactor Architectures Toward Large-Scale Hydrogen Generation”, identifies the main challenges facing industrial-scale hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting. It discusses performance, stability, and reactor design issues, proposing strategies such as heterojunction construction, surface modification, and advanced nanostructuring to improve efficiency.

The authors also emphasise the role of AI-assisted design in accelerating the optimisation of both catalysts and reactor systems. Their perspective aligns closely with MOF2H2’s objectives, reinforcing the importance of integrating materials innovation and system engineering to deliver safe, scalable, and cost-effective green hydrogen production.
